This title better have given you a chuckle...or at least made you kiss your teeth :D
The news is everywhere. However, if you are unaware or just didn't get a chance to share your own opinion of the issue...YOUR WELCOME :P
On the 29th of May 2012, Nigerian President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan announced (obviously without proper consideration....like everything else we've seen him do so far) on this beautiful democratic day that the university well-known as the University of Lagos be renamed Moshood Abiola University.
The most important question on my mind is WHY?! Why? Why fix something that isn't broken?
Someone said what's the big deal, it is just a name. My response to that: No! It's not just a name. It's part of who you are. It's your alma mata. I'm currently in Nigeria and there's hardly a place I go to that I do not make reference to my post-secondary institution...WITH PRIDE.
[OK, maybe not always with pride...but you get the gist]
There is already a polytechnic named after late Chief MKO Abiola, amongst other things. My guess is he would be very appreciative (if he was still living). Whatever legacy the University has (made) came while they were the University of Lagos. Let the name remain with its legacy.
Another comment made on the issue was the fact that late Chief MKO Abiola impacted the whole nation and not just Lagos state, so if such a change should be implemented, it should be carried out in Abuja. I am indifferent about that, however I do see it as a solid remark. If you must honor our dear Abiola, how about building a completely new institution, creating a national park or monumental statues which EVERYONE can have access to.
One of the late Abiola's children decides to share a few words with us. She says,
"it's a good thing what the president wants to do, to honor [my] father's name. But
if he really wants to do that, he should address the issue of POVERTY in Nigeria
because that's what [my] father was looking into before he died."
Now, the students or representatives of Unilag have decided to take on the streets and have blocked the 3rd mainland bridge. Hunnie, I'm against the name change as much as you, but what the hell does blocking the road (far far away from the issue/ university) have to do with anything?! Where is the Student Union?
I'll end on a funny note though. I have fun bbm contacts...with SOLID points :p Enjoy!
